Bobcats rally into second round

Bell County did everything they needed to on Friday to advance to the second round of the Class 3A playoffs. The Bobcats racked up 309 yards on the ground en route to a lopsided 48-8 victory over Breathitt County.

The victory sets up a rematch with district foe Corbin in the second round. The Redhounds handed Bell a 42-8 defeat on Log Mountain on Oct. 13. Breathitt County was eliminated from the playoffs with the loss.

It was an all-around effort by the Bobcats with both the offense and defense putting on impressive performances. Colby Frazier paced the offense with 127 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries. Jordan Wombles finished the game with 44 yards on seven carries, while Tyson Thomas ended the night with 36 yards on eight carries.

Quarterback Issac Collett went 7-of-11 through the air for 125 yards and two touchdowns. Jason Jones hauled in three of those passes for 47 yards and a touchdown. Wombles caught two passes for 56 yards. Antonio Zachery hauled in a 17-yard touchdown on his lone reception.

Defensively, the Bobcats held Breathitt to 86 yards rushing and 111 yards passing. Caleb Lefevers, Dawson Widener and Zachery led the team in tackles with five apiece. Zachery and Jones each grabbed interceptions while Alex McCoy recovered a fumble.

Breathitt County’s Cameron Stacy ended the game with 12 completions for 96 yards and a touchdown. Brandon Slaughter led the home Bobcats with seven receptions for 58 yards. Trey Noble ended with three receptions for 29 yards and a touchdown.

On the ground, Tyson Gross paced Breathitt with 35 yards on nine carries. Noble added 45 yards on his lone carry.

Bell County found the end zone first. After recovering a fumble, Frazier found pay dirt on a 6-yard run with 5:06 remaining in the first. The sophomore converted the two-point attempt to give the visiting Bobcats an 8-0 lead.

Bell found the end zone again with 11:20 remaining in the half. Collett found Jones on a touchdown strike to increase the lead to 14-0. Minutes later, an interception by Zachery set up a touchdown run by Frazier to increase the lead to 20-0 with 8:29 remaining in the half.

The visiting Bobcats scored three more times before the half ended. Trevor Kidd scored on a 40-yard run to balloon the lead to 26-0. A touchdown pass from Collett to Zachery with 2:43 remaining in the second improved the lead to 32-0.

A 22-yard field goal by Wombles sent Bell County into halftime with a 35-0 lead.

The visiting Bobcats continued to add points to the scoreboard in the second half with Wombles scoring on a 7-yard run with 8:34 remaining in the third to increase the lead to 42-0.

Both teams scored once in the fourth quarter. Breathitt finally found the end zone on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Stacy to Noble to cut the lead to 42-8 with 10:39 remaining in the game.

Bell County sealed the 40-point victory when Hunter Bailey found pay dirt on a 7-yard run.

Bell County (7-4) will travel to Corbin (10-1) for a second-round game against the Redhounds.
