Betty Bennett (Myra Elizabeth) Golden, 88 passed away in Louisville, KY on June 30th with family and friends by her side. Betty was born In Pineville, KY on April 3, 1925 to Myra Johnson and W. Neale Bennett Jr. While her first home as a baby was a cabin on Yellow Creek, she spent most of her time growing up in the house of her grandparents on Cherry St in Pineville. Betty was a cheerleader in high school and went on to attend Eastern KY State Teachers College (EKU). Her work experience included time at Big Jim Coal Co and substitute teaching. However, she seemed to have had the most fun working as a telephone operator (a job which taught her what not to say on the telephone).

The love of her life was Dr. James S. Golden Jr. (Jimmy). The two of them had a marriage which was a true partnership and tremendous example of a loving relationship. Jimmy said many times the best thing he ever did was “get Betty Bennett to marry him.” Betty adored Jimmy and supported him in his many and varied pursuits. Early in their marriage they travelled to Cuba and made several trips to Captiva Island, FL. They also spent many memorable days and nights on a houseboat on Norris Lake. It was always a happy time to be with Betty and Jimmy whether in their house or on the lake.

While Betty never had children of her own, she became a 2nd mother and shining light to people over several generations. Many people felt she was a “true angel on earth.” She was a long time member of the Presbyterian Church of Pineville where she enjoyed teaching Sunday school to children. Her house on Tennessee Ave. was always open. She was there with a smiling face, a hug, a treat or just the right answer or piece of wisdom. She never spoke ill of anyone and had a huge capacity to forgive. Just a few minutes with her would put a smile on your face and sunshine in your day.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy and brother W. Neale (Bud) Bennett, MD. She is survived by nieces and nephews: Susan Bennett Boyd; sons Travis and Drew, W. Neale Bennett(Karen) sons, Beau and Chase, Asher Golden, John H. Golden; daughter Rebekah and sons, Jason and John, James R. Golden (Heather); sons James and Matthew, daughters Elizabeth and Katherine (their mother Judy), Ruth Golden Howard; sons Kemp and Noah. Besides family, Betty of course leaves many friends whom she loved tremendously and who will miss her terribly.

Special recognition goes to her doctor and friend, Martha Combs Woolum, MD; caregivers Cora and Ethel Tigue, Dellene Rogers, Anna Roop, Audrey Brock, Sue Fugate, Rena Blankenship, Crystal Evans and Sandy Couch.
