L.S. Bales, 88, of Rose Hill, went to be with the Lord on Friday, September 6, 2013 at Claiborne County Hospital from complications due to a long battle with kidney and cardiovascular disease.
L.S. was born on December 14, 1924, in Rose Hill, the third out of five children, to the late Howell Edgar and Etta Jane Dean Bales. He lived in Rose Hill all of his life and was a member of Rose Dale Baptist Church from a young age. He served his country proudly during World War II in the Pacific Theater as a member of the United States Army’s 305th Infantry, Company A, 77th Division. He saw action in areas including Guam, Leyte, Ie Shima and Okinawa where he was wounded and received the Purple Heart. He drove a school bus for twenty years for the Lee County Public School System and was a farmer who worked and loved his family farm his entire life.
In addition to his parents, L.S. was preceded in death by his sister, Hallene Kelly, two brothers-in-law, Ben Kelly and Edgar “Jack” Smyth, a nephew, Gene Kelly, and parents-in-laws, Frank and Birdie Turner.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 57 years, Jewell Turner Bales, and two devoted children, Jay L. Bales and Sue Ann Bales, all of Rose Hill; one brother, Eugene Bales and wife Jeanette, of Chattanooga, TN; and two sisters, Ada Dare Smith, of Noblesville, IN, and Betty Ruth Jones and husband Roscoe, of Vinton, VA. Seven nieces and nephews also survive along with a host of extended family members, special neighbors and close friends to mourn his passing.
The family received friends from 6 until 8:00 p.m. Sunday, September 8, at Robinette Funeral Home in Rose Hill. The funeral service followed at 8:00 p.m. with Reverends Kevin Jerrell and Norman Clark officiating.
The committal service and interment was held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 9, at Lee Memorial Gardens Park West in Rose Hill. Everyone was asked to meet at the funeral home by 10:30 a.m. Monday to travel in procession to the cemetery.
