It was Hall of Fame weekend in Pineville and the Mountain Lions put together a Hall of Fame performance in the second half as they broke open a two-touchdown game and rolled to a 53-14 win over Allen Central.
Senior Conner Ford scored five touchdowns — two rushing, two receiving and one by recovering a live punt in the end zone — to lead the way for the Lions. Ford finished with 203 yards on 14 carries and caught six passes for another 104 yards in the game.
Bradley Fuson added 146 yards on the ground and scored twice while freshman quarterback Tuck Woolum completed 8 of 14 passes for 145 yards and two touchdowns.
“I’ll be honest, I wasn’t really happy with the way we played. Sometimes you’re happy after a loss and sometimes not very happy when you win,” Pineville coach Bart Elam said. “In the second half we came out and played a lot better, but in the first half we got up 20-0 and kind of took our foot off the gas a little bit. And you can’t do that.”
The Lions got off to a fast start as Ford scored on a 38-yard pass from Woolum and Will Adams added the extra point for a 7-0 lead less than three minutes into the game. Following a defensive stop, Ford got loose for an 86-yard touchdown run. He added a 4-yard TD run later in the first quarter that made it 20-0.
Pineville’s offense stalled a bit from there and Allen Central scored on Cameron Hamilton’s 1-yard keeper to get on the board with 3:01 to go in the second quarter and it was 20-6 at the half.
“You’ve got to put teams away when you can and we didn’t do that,” Elam said.
It was a different story in the second half.
Pineville took the opening kick off of the third quarter and needed just two plays to score. Robbie Miller broke a 20-yard run and Fuson went 43-yards for a touchdown.
The Lions recovered a fumble on the following kick and Fuson capped a quick drive with a 6-yard touchdown for a 34-6 lead.
Allen Central answered with Hamilton’s 16-yard touchdown run and Preston Thacker slipped a tackle and ran in the conversion, but it was all Pineville from there.
“We shored some things up in the second half, but if you can ever be upset with your defense after a 14-point outing I’m sure coach Shafer is,” Elam said.
Ford took a swing pass from Woolum and went 35 yards for a touchdown later in the third quarter. Keith Sexton added a 9-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. Ford completed the scoring with 3:27 to play when an Adams punt hit a Rebel return man at the goal line and Ford recovered the ball in the end zone.
The Lions rolled up 397 rushing yards on 39 carries while Allen Central also ran the ball 39 times and gained 166 yards. Hamilton led the Rebels with 86 yards on 11 carries and was 5-of-16 passing for 66 yards.
Pineville just got the better of the battle at the line of scrimmage.
“I think we should have. At times they schemed us pretty well, Jeremy Hall does a good job with his kids and he prepares his teams just like we do,” Elam said. “They had us a little confused in the second quarter with some things, but we made some adjustments and came out alright.”
Allen Central (1-5) visits Phelps next week. Pineville (4-2) starts district play next Friday when they host Jenkins.
“We’re excited to get into (district play). We’re happy to be 4-2 and it’s good to get a win going in, but that doesn’t mean anything right now. We’re 0-0 and we’ve got to take it one step at a time,” said Elam. “That first step is Jenkins, our goal of a home playoff game is right there and we’ve got to beat Jenkins to keep that alive.”
