Routine repairs on the Powell River bridge, located on U.S. Hwy. 25E/SR 32 between Tazewell and Harrogate, Tenn., began Monday, according to a release from Southern Constructors Inc.

The work may cause delays in traffic.

The company was awarded the contract from the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) for the repairs as part of the department’s maintenance program, according to Todd Butler, vice president of Southern Constructors.

“There’s nothing major, just routine repairs we’ll be working on before they become an issue,” he said. “Their maintenance program is one of the better programs in the nation.”

Under TDOT’s maintenance program, bridges are evaluated every one to two years, he added.

Butler said they hope to complete the work as close as possible to April 30.

The work will require lane closures throughout the project duration, according to the release, and there will be temporary traffic control devices and signs to route traffic.

“We will proceed with this work as quickly as possible,” Butler said, “but in the meantime we ask that motorists, especially drivers of emergency vehicles, be aware of traffic pattern changes and delays due to construction.”
