Lady Cats pull away from South, 64-40

CORBIN — Thursday night the Lady Cats were cold — but not that cold. South Laurel is young and not that bold.


Anyway, Bell County overcame a rough offensive first half to pull away for a 64-40 win over the Lady Cardinals at the Cumberland Falls Invitational.


South Laurel had two eighth-graders and a freshman among their top five scorers in the game and they led 10-9 early on behind 3-pointers from junior Brittany Vandeventer and freshman Katie Reynolds.


Lady Cat Jess Sanders answered with a 3 of her own and Bell closed the first period on a 6-0 run to take a 15-10 lead. Neither team did a lot offensively in the second period and the Lady Cats led it 23-17 at the half.


South got as close as four points early in the third, but Bell County used an 8-0 run to take control of the game and jump out to a 31-19 advantage. The Lady Cats outscored the Lady Cardinals 27-12 over the entire third period and carried a 50-29 lead into the fourth.


Junior guard Maci Morris led Bell County with 16 points while Kelli Smith added 14 and Katrina Johnson 12. Morgan Garnett chipped in with eight points and Sanders finished with seven.


Vandeventer led South Laurel with 10 points while Reynolds added eight.


Bell County (2-0) advances to play host Corbin on Saturday at 8:15 p.m. in the tournament’s championship game.It’s also a rematch of last years 13th Region championship game.


South (0-1) will play Whitley County at 6:30 p.m.
