In an effort to promote healthy eating habits, Farm to School held an Iron Chef cook off at Middlesboro High School Wednesday with students taking on the staff.
The objectives for the school cook off were for those involved to gain knowledge on local ingredients, acquire skills in preparing simple food items and to develop knowledge of nutrition to help improve healthy food choices.
“Our whole initiative is to bring fresh, local produce into the school system,” said Farm to School Coordinator Lakin Daniels.
In the end, the overall winners of the competition were the staff after winning in the appetizers and dessert categories. The staff who were among the winners were Duke Mayes, Jane Cambron, Billie Irvin, Bobby Bennett, William Blechschmidt and Jesse Allan.
Students Ben Slusher, Heath Gambrel and Jacob Schneider won in the main dish category.
The event came about after several students responded well to the cook off idea. Daniels said the students helped plan the event.
“They loved the idea of students vs. staff,” said Daniels.
The event is part of the Farm to School program at MHS. Farm to School is a program developing creative ways to promote healthy eating in local schools.
“We’re starting while they’re young,” said Daniels. “We feel like if we can get it in their heads now then it will carry out into adulthood.”
Farm to School is one of the eight initiatives in Spread the Health Appalachia.
According to information provided by Spread the Health Appalachia, the Appalachian region of Kentucky has one of the highest rates of chronic disease in the U.S.
“The whole reason for Spread the Health Appalachia is to prevent chronic disease,” said Daniels.
