Cumberland Gap’s Lady Panthers fell behind early to Knott Central in their final game at the Pine Mountain Classic on Saturday. They made a couple of runs in the second half to get within five points, but the Lady Patriots pulled away late for a 59-44 win.

“We spent a lot of energy getting back into the game, and then we had to made substitutions and got some people in foul trouble. We just never could get over that hump,” Lady Panther coach Dennis Cline said. “(The tournament) has been great competition. All of these teams are about like us, about our size.”

Kristen Waugh scored ten of her 16 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Lady Patriots. Knott jumped out to an 18-8 lead after one period as Waugh and Savannah Hatmaker hit 3-pointers.

Chelsea Bingham led Cumberland Gap with four points in the first period and Rachel Kimbrough came off the bench to score all six of her points in the second quarter. Knott was held to just two field goals in the period and a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Chelsea Fultz brought the Lady Panthers within 26-21 by halftime.

The Lady Patriots led by as many as eleven in the third quarter, but Cumberland Gap closed strong again with Fultz hitting another trey and Bingham scoring off a nice feed from Amber Craig to make it 36-31 going into the fourth.

Knott got a free throw from Waugh, a putback from Mariah King and baskets from Haley Short and Waugh as they opened the fourth quarter on a 7-0 run. Two free throws from Bingham followed by a Fultz steal and a 3 from Tessa Brooks had Cumberland Gap in striking distance at 43-36 with 5:46 to play.

But Waugh converted a three-point play and the Lady Patriots were able to gradually pull away down the stretch.

“Right now we just don’t have the margin for error to take a two-minute scoring drought and then be able to overcome that,” Cline added.

Bingham led the Lady Panthers with 10 points while Fultz added nine.

Earlier on Saturday, CGHS ran into a stingy Lynn Camp defense without Bingham and dropped a 50-29 decision to the Lady Wildcats.

“We spent all of ourselves on Friday night. That overtime loss to Pineville was really tough,” Cline said. “We turned around with an 11 o’clock game and just didn’t have any legs. We played a lot of people in both games. The effort was good, we just had trouble scoring points.”

Merita Burke and Brooklyn Bryant scored 12 points each to lead Lynn Camp. The Lady Wildcats led it 8-4 after one period and 24-9 at the half. Tessa Pittman (five points) and Tessa Brooks (four) combined to score all nine Cumberland Gap points in the first half.

Seven different Lady Panthers were able to score in the third period, led by Pittman’s four points. They got their offense going a bit, but Lynn Camp was able to answer and went on to the 21-point win.

Pittman led Cumberland Gap (2-9) with nine points while Brooks and Craig finished with five points each in the early game. CGHS returns to action on Saturday at Oneida, Tenn.
