It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish. The Bell County Bobcats erased a 12-point deficit in the fourth quarter to force overtime and dominated the extra period for a 65-59 win over North Laurel on Tuesday. It was the fourth straight win for the Bobcats.
Bell senior wings Tyler Potter and Jake Patterson were held to a combined five points over three quarters, but exploded for 24 points in the fourth quarter and overtime. Potter scored nine in the fourth as the Bobcats outscored the Jags 21-9 and tied the game on Patterson’s late 3-pointer.
Potter and Patterson scored four points each in the extra frame and Josh Asher added a basket as Bell County went on to the six-point win.
Sophomore Zach Partin continued his recent strong play in the post and put in a game-high 21 points. Potter finished with 15 while Patterson and Asher added 14 apiece.
North Laurel was led by Chris Miller’s 15 points. Austin Thompson scored 11 off the bench and Peyton Broughton added 10.
Asher hit two 3-pointers and scored eight points in the first quarter and Partin added seven as Bell County built a 15-12 lead after one period. North got two 3s from Kyle Jeffers in the opening quarter.
The Jags continued to connect from long range in the second period with Thompson hitting a pair of treys and Elijah Jervis and Thompson also hitting from downtown. North Laurel hit seven 3-pointers overall in the first half to take a 28-26 lead into the half. Partin scored six more points in the period to help the Bobcats stay close.
Broughton had the hot hand and scored nine of his ten points in the third quarter to help the Jaguars open up a 46-34 lead after three.
North left the door open for a Bell comeback by hitting just seven of their 14 free throw attempts in the fourth quarter and Potter and Patterson heated up late as the Bobcats pulled out the win.
Both teams have rivalry games on the road Friday with Bell County (13-8) playing at Middlesboro in the second game of a girls/boys double-header and North Laurel (11-11) visiting South Laurel.
