New Tazewell man dies after colliding with Harlan floodwall

Harlan City Police and the Harlan Fire Department responded to a wreck at the Sunshine exit of U.S. 421 Saturday morning. According to Harlan Police Chief Mike Thomas, Don Chadwell, 77, of New Tazewell, Tenn., was pronounced dead at Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital shortly after the crash which was reported about 10:40 a.m. Thomas said Chadwell had left a local business and was pulling a small trailer with a riding lawnmower with his 2012 Dodge pickup. Thomas said it appeared Chadwell suffered an apparent heart attack while driving, pulling straight across from KY 3459 without stopping and collided with the floodwall, causing major damage to his truck. Cpl. Jeff Owens and Officer Derick Noe responded to the scene and were assisted by Thomas, who is an accident reconstructionist, and Evarts City Police. Chadwell was transported to ARH by Harlan EMS. Thomas was the accident reconstructionist at the scene.
