Five Bell County 4-Hers are set to go to Louisville in mid-August to compete in the 4-H Country Ham project at the Kentucky State Fair.

The group salt cured their hams in February and hung them in the Knox County 4-H Ham House through the winter and spring. They recently cleaned and rehung the hams and are preparing speeches and presentations about the hams for competition at the state fair.

This was the first year Bell County 4-H has done the country ham project. All involved enjoyed the experience and learned a valuable technique of food preservation.

Several hams remain and will be put up for auction at Farm Field Day on Aug. 29. All proceeds from the ham auction will benefit the Country Ham project in the future.

Thanks to a generous donation from Bell County Farm Bureau, Bell County 4-H now has enough funding to build a Country Ham House in the county. 4-Hers are looking forward to that project and the continuing of the 4-H Country Ham project well into the future!

Sign-ups for the Country Ham project will take place in December 2014 for Spring 2015.
