The Bell County Sheriff’s Office has issued an urgent scam alert for people in the area.

“It has come to our attention that someone has been calling people in the area claiming to be either from the Bell County Sheriff’s Office, Bell County Dispatch or Kentucky State Police,” states the BCSO alert. “Some of the calls have been in regard to supposed warrants the caller claims the victims have on record. At some point during the conversation the caller claims that the victim can pay a fee to have the warrant removed.”

“The other is in regard to the caller claiming they are from the Kentucky State Police collecting donations for the Bell County Sheriff’s Department,” it goes on, adding that at least one of the calls was made to a landline from Ashland, Kentucky. The number was 606-618-9447, it states.

“For the record, neither the Sheriff’s Department, Dispatch, nor KSP will make calls of this nature. Anyone with an active warrant will not be contacted by phone. There is also no fundraising of any kind being conducted,” it states.

If you have been a victim of these calls, you are asked to call 606-337-6174.
