During mid-April, the Settlement School property is a wildflower wonderland with nearly 100 species of spring wildflowers in bloom.
Pine Mountain Wildflower Weekend will be held Friday-Sunday.
The weekend begins at 6 p.m. Friday with dinner followed by the program, “Birds of the Cumberland Mountains,” presented by Ben Begley of the Pine Mountain staff.
Friday’s activities end with a hike where you’ll listen to the sounds of the forest at night.
Concurrent hikes on the school’s campus will follow an early morning bird foray on Saturday and continue after lunch at Lilley Cornett Woods, an old growth forest, and on the Pine Mountain School campus.
Saturday night’s entertainment will be Adrian and Julie Shepherd-Powell, of Big Stone Gap, Va., part of the old time string band, The Railsplitters. The recently took first place in the Gathering of the Gap old time band contest and third place in the Morehad Old Time Fiddlers Convention.
Sunday’s schedule includes hikes on the Galax Trail on campus or along the crest of the Pine Mountain on Little Shepherd Trail. The weekend concludes with lunch on Sunday.
