This school year brought many changes to the Middlesboro Independent School District, including a new press box for the football stadium and school consolidation.

The school board members said recently they hope the press box will be completed before the next home football game. The construction project will be completed within budget. It will conclude with a coat of black and yellow striped paint to match the older press box.

The school district prepared for consolidation using an information gathering and planning process. The fourth grade was moved to the primary school, which houses kindergarten through third, while the fifth grade joined with the sixth through eighth grades at the middle school.

The emptied East End School has become a prekindergarten head start program.

“Overall it’s been a very positive move. The biggest problem we’re having with the fifth graders is lockers, which was to be expected,” said Middlesboro Middle School principal Terry Bradley.

Middlesboro School Superintendent Steve Martin said bullying and discipline problems are on the decline since the consolidation.

He attributes this positive impact to the increased school pride and return to school traditions brought about by hard work from teachers.

Currently the middle school is working on a new traffic plan to fix congestion problems reported during morning drop off and in the afternoon at pick up.

The continuation of the consolidation process comes with a potential renovation project for the affected schools.

“This will be the next step in our efforts to make our schools state of the art facilities and to make sure our students have everything they need to be college and career ready,” said Martin.
