Greg Wheeler and Paul Harris opened Western Building Supply in Ewing, Va., together in 1978 to provide people with a store for building materials.
Before the time of Home Depot and Lowe’s, there was nowhere to purchase renovation or construction goods in the Tri-State area.
Eventually, Wheeler bought Harris out of the company and continued to expand it.
Since Western’s beginning, they have moved to three different locations to increase the variety of goods they offer to their customers.
They have also added several large storage barns to their location for more space.
Western has survived tough times, including the death of many longtime customers and contractors.
“We’ve been here for so long that this really affects us. It’s unexpected and can be traumatizing to the business,” said employee Nancy Wheeler.
The economy has also taken a toll on Western, but they have made changes to compete with larger national construction supply chain stores.
The market has caused people to take supply quotes around to different store for the lowest prices. So, Western has been forced to continue to drop prices as much as possible to earn customers’ business.
“Lately, the hospital has closed and mines have closed. It’s taken away lots of the money people had to spend on stuff like remodeling or construction,” said Wheeler.
Western Building Supply has been around over 35 years and continues to make changes to better serve the people of Ewing, Va., and to outlast the tough times.
They are located at 3093 Dr. Thomas Walker Road and are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday.
