Pharmacist Mikel Byrne’s expertise come from years of schooling and working alongside the original business owners at Gill Pharmacy.
He purchased the business and opened the doors as Mikel’s Pharmacy on May 31, 1979.
In 1990, a structure fire took over the pharmacy and destroyed the building located at 1928 Cumberland Avenue in Middlesboro.
Byrne gathered his business supplies and pharmaceuticals and moved across the street to a temporary location.
A year later, Byrne purchased the original building and lot from his landlord and reconstructed his business from the ground up.
He also expanded into the adjacent business space, adding more room for convenience items, over-the-counter drugs and more customer parking.
Byrne was able to keep a stained glass window from the original building which now hangs above the pharmacy counter inside the store.
The drive-through window has significantly contributed to the success of Mikel’s Pharmacy.
“It’s really a good thing. If you don’t feel good or don’t want to get out in public you can just go through the drive-through, get your prescription filled and get out. It’s a convenience for the people and that’s what they want,” said Byrne.
Despite changing health care regulations, Byrne contributes his successes to his workers which include pharmacy technicians, clerks, a third-party insurance worker, stocker and delivery driver.
“There’s no such thing as cash customers anymore. It’s all insurance based and it really makes a difference on cash flow. We can weather that and were able to sustain the business because we’ve been around for a while. There’s so many rules that it really affects us,” said Byrne.
Mikel’s Pharmacy is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. The pharmacy staff can be reached by telephone at 606-248-1052.
