The Ideal Print Shop: Changing with the times
Anthony Cloud Staff Writer
Times, they are changing and The Ideal Print Shop is flowing with the ever changing trends in the print business. The print shop, located on 15th Street in Middlesboro, has been in business since 1980. The original owner of the business was Kenneth Collins, the father of Shawn Collins. In the beginning, the print shop was located in Harrogate, Tenn.
After learning the trade in 1988, Shawn and his wife Yvonne Collins bought the business in 1991. The shop was moved to the Giles Industrial Park in July 1991 and then again to its current location along 15th Street behind Walmart in August 2002 in the old M. Fine and Sons’ building.
The print shop has gone through two remodeling periods, one in 2002 and another after the summer flood of 2011. Though the building had 3 feet of water in it, The Ideal Print Shop never lost an account.
Since acquiring the business in 1991, Shawn and Yvonne have made several decisions to stay on top of the printing business. In November 2002, The Ideal Print Shop expanded with new, modern equipment and new technology. Originally, the print shop could just print on paper. Over the past 10 years, the company has diversified its services.
“I’ve seen things tighten up with the economy the way it is, so to keep our sales going we have diversified,” said Shawn Collins.
Shawn said the changes were not made out of necessity, but rather to stay up with the trending markets in the printing business. Shawn and Yvonne said they try to stay at the forefront when it comes to equipment and technology. The customer base has always been there for the business Shawn said.
“Really, I can’t say the economy has affected us that much,” said Yvonne.
Throughout the years, the Collins’ have bought one print company that performed silk screening services and another printing business. Now the company can do embroidery, textile printing, screen printing, banners, logos, decals, advertising, specialties, engraving, trophies, etc.
“We print on anything,” said Shawn.
The company also has a website that allows people to go online and customize their own product. The buyer can then go to the print shop and pick that item up.
Though The Ideal Print Shop continues to flourish, the Collins continue to look toward the future. Their next move is to become a certified marketing firm with the help of their son Michael Collins, who is currently enrolled in a doctoral program for marketing.
Michael said the business is also currently working on a new marketing strategy that will bring something new to the area.
