Bell County High School went on lock down Wednesday after it was reported that a student may have a concealed deadly weapon on the premises, officials said.

The weapon later found was a large knife in a holster, according to Shane Stewart of the Bell County Sheriff’s Department.

He reported the student in possession of the weapon was charged in connection with the incident.

Superintendent Yvonne Gilliam said in a release that she was notified of the incident at approximately 1:30 p.m.

“I instructed the school to proceed into a lock-down status and immediately notified state and local police,” said Gilliam in the release. “Shortly after I arrived on campus, the student was identified and state and local police secured the classroom and removed the suspect without incident.”

Gilliam expressed her gratitude to Bell County Sheriff Bruce Bennett, KSP Capt. P.J. Burnett and officers on the scene for their immediate response and assistance.

Deputy Max Graves is in charge of the investigation.
