Harvey Wheland is a retired employee of Elmo Greer and Son who was diagnosed with cancer. His family is holding a benefit gospel singing at 6 p.m. on Saturday at Gap Creek Baptist Church, located at 200 Arthur Road in Harrogate, Tenn., to help raise money for medical bills acquired because of the illness.

Several groups will perform at the benefit including, Tennessee 90, The Warwick Family, True Gospel, The Gospel Lights and Crosspoint. The Shawanee Baptist Youth Choir will be singing at 7 p.m. as well.

There will be numerous cakes for sale as well as refreshments. There will also be a chance to win a handmade quilt. Tickets for the quilt will be available at the door.

Wheland, 71, was initially diagnosed after a small lump was found. The family took him to Tennova in Tennessee. A family member said the cancer was supposed to be non-aggressive but ended up quadrupling in size a week later. Surgery was performed to remove a lung after cancer took it over.

Eventually the cancer spread throughout his body.
