Harlan police arrest man for trafficking near school

An alleged beating of a child with a belt led to the arrest of a man and woman Thursday.


Amos Thomas, 32, and Natasha Jerrell, 31, both of Holmes Mill, were arrested by Kentucky State Trooper Kenny Abner on abuse charges.


According to a citation, Jerrell allowed her child to be seriously injured due to being beaten with a belt.


Another citation issued in the case states Thomas intentionally abused a juvenile under the age of 12 by beating the child with a belt, leaving bruising on the 6-year-old’s back.


Thomas was charged with first-degree criminal abuse of a child under 12 and lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $50,000 full cash bond.


Jerrell was charged with first-degree criminal abuse of a child under 12 and lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $50,000 full cash bond.


In other police news, John Burke, 37, of Cumberland, was arrested by Harlan City Police Officer Brandon Watts on a charge of trafficking a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a school.


Burke was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $1,000 bond secured by 10 percent.
