If you are looking for a quick filling station or soda while traveling in Ewing, Va., Patty’s Neighborhood Market is there to serve local customers as well as passersby.
Owner Patty Yates has been in the convenience store business since 1988.
The original store was located in front of the Ewing Post Office building. In 1992, Yates moved the Patty’s store to the current location where renovations were made to create the store you see today.
In 2005, Yates made expansions to offer customers a wider variety of products including sodas, snacks, alcohol and tobacco products, as well as Marathon gas.
Tough times have not been a stranger to Yates. During winter months, break-ins and burglaries have increased at Patty’s.
“In this area here there’s no factories to keep people in work. Around here it’s mostly tobacco, stuff like that, and that’s about the only income people around here have,” said Yates.
Several employees are family members which Yates believes creates a welcoming atmosphere for customers.
“It’s hard working with family, but it has helped the business because customers like to see that when they come in the doors,” said Yates.
Because the business has been around for nearly 30 years, it has survived several slumps in the economy.
Manager Darryl Fee and Yates attribute their endurance to enjoying the everyday work and putting any revenue back into building the business.
“Surviving is working long hours, enjoying what you do and being dedicated to the business,” said Fee.
Yates and Fee appreciate having customers that have been with them since opening their doors in 1988.
Patty’s Neighborhood Market is located at 4505 Wilderness Road in Ewing.
The business is open Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m. and weekends from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m. Call 276-861-4055 for more information.
