A former Harlan Independent Schools teacher is facing charges including multiple counts of distribution of matter portraying sexual performance by a minor.


Kevin Scott Crider, 41, of Evarts, was arrested by the Kentucky State Police on Wednesday.


According to KSP Public Affairs Officer Shane Jacobs, KSP was contacted by Harlan Independent Schools in February concerning allegations of a teacher having improper communication with students. KSP began an investigation at that time. An arrest warrant and search warrant was then obtained after evidence was taken to the county attorney.


According to a press release, the search warrant was executed at Crider’s home. KSP detectives Craig Miller, Josh Howard and Jason Joseph removed several pieces of computer/electronic equipment from Crider’s residence as a result of the search.


Crider has been charged with eight counts of distribution of obscene matter to minors, 15 counts of distribution of matter portraying sexual performance by a minor and one count of use of an electronic device to entice a minor.


Crider was lodged at the Harlan County Detention Center on a $150,000 full cash bond.


The case is under investigation by Miller.


In other police news:


* Johnathon Baldwin, 27, was arrested by Harlan County Sheriff’s Det. Danny Lewis on Tuesday. According to the arrest warrant obtained by Lewis, Baldwin possessed stolen mail belonging to Time of Praise Ministries. Included was a check for the amount of $140 written on the account of Howard’s Carpet. The check was cashed at Mack’s Supermarket.


Baldwin was arrested and charged with possession of stolen mail and theft by deception including cold checks under $500. Baldwin was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $7,000 full cash bond;


* Daniel Myers, 30, of Cranks, was arrested by KSP Trooper Jimmy Halcomb on Tuesday on an indictment warrant. The indictment charges Myers with theft by unlawful taking of $500 or more but under $10,000 and persistent felony offender I. Myers was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $1,000 full cash bond.
