The Bell County Clerk’s Office is now offering taxpayers the option to pay with debit or credit cards in both the Middlesboro and Pineville office for any type of transaction.

Those transactions include deed room recording fees, car tags and taxes, and hunting and fishing licenses.

“Offering customers this option is something we are so excited about, and so far customers have found it convenient and have been excited about it too,” said Makenzie Standifer, bookkeeper.

Standifer said the move was made because of the amount of customers that have been turned away because all they had to pay with was a card.

“This is a convenience to the taxpayer,” said Standifer.

The process of setting up the service took around three months, according to Standifer. It started with contacting other clerk’s offices and local government offices in different counties and asking if they provided a credit or debit option. The response was also always a company called LexisNexis.

“We chose to go with LexisNexis because of the transparency involved with fee collection,” said Standifer. “The fee is a transaction fee that LexisNexis charges the person who is using their debit or credit card.”

The clerk’s office did not have to pay for the machinery or supplies involved with the credit/debit terminals, according to Standifer. She said the result is actually less cost for the office.

There is a $2.50 transaction fee for any debit card transaction. It is a $2.50 fee for transactions up to $50 using a credit card. Fees increase for credit card payments over $50.

All major credit and debit cards are accepted. For more information about the fees involved with using a debit or credit card, call the clerk’s office at 606-337-6143.
