Buchanan Tropical Sno has been a staple business in the Tri-State area since 1998. Junior Buchanan opened the business of vendor trailers and quickly began setting up at the Giles Flea Market, little league games and Bible schools.

Tropical Sno offers 14 standard flavors of shaved ice, hundreds of mix recipe flavors as well as fresh squeezed lemonade.

Buchanan currently sets up at two locations at the flea market every Saturday and Sunday. He also sets up at local businesses for employee and customer appreciation days, numerous local events and traveling as far as Pigeon Forge for car shows.

Buchanan normally has four employees at each event — two in each trailer — unless there is a big event that he feels requires additional help.

Buchanan is in the majority of local businesses that say they can feel the strain on the local economy.

“I can tell money is tight, there has been a decline,” said Buchanan.

Although he can feel the effects of the tightening of purse strings, Buchanan says his business is still doing good even though it is not as good as it once was.

“We still do pretty good but its not what it was 10 years ago or even five years ago,” continued Buchanan.
