HINDMAN — Bell County captured the first girls tournament as part of the WYMT Mountain Classic in impressive fashion on Friday. Four Lady Cats scored in double-figures as Bell cruised to a 71-42 win over Magoffin County in the championship game.


Lady Cat junior guard Maci Morris led all players with 22 points in the game while Katrina Johnson added 13 points, Morgan Garnett 11 and Jess Sanders 10.


Madison Reed led the Lady Hornets (10-3) with 19 points and Jamie Castle added 15. Jazzy Howard, who led Magoffin County with 32 points in a semifinal win over Harlan County, was held to only six points on Friday.


Bell County jumped out in front from the get-go. Garnett hit three 3-pointers in the first quarter while Morris and Johnson added four points apiece as the Lady Cats led 21-6 after one quarter.


The onslaught continued in the second quarter with Morris pouring in nine of her points in the period. Sanders added five, including a 3-pointer. Magoffin got eight points from Reed in the quarter, but by halftime the Bell County lead was 44-19.


With the big lead, the Lady Cats controlled the pace in the second half. Johnson scored six points in the third quarter and Sanders hit another 3 as Bell answered five points from Reed and four from Howard and maintained a lead of over 20 points the rest of the way.


Five different Lady Cats scored in the fourth quarter, led by Morris’ seven points and Bell County went on to the 29-point win.


Bell County (11-3) is off until Friday when they host South Laurel.
