Bell County’s Aaron Jenkins just might be the best defensive catcher in the 13th Region but Thursday he put his arm to use in a different way. Making his debut on the mound, Jenkins was nearly perfect in spinning a five-inning no-hitter in the Bobcats’ 11-0 win over Claiborne, Tenn.
Jenkins struck out eight without allowing a hit or a walk and faced the minimum 15 batters in his gem. Bulldog Aaron Faulkner was hit by a pitch with one out in the second inning for Claiborne’s only base runner of the game. He was erased as second baseman Jacob Rose fielded a grounder and tagged Faulker before throwing on to first to complete the double-play.
Junior Hayden Gilbert drove in three runs with a pair of singles to pace the Bobcats offense while Rose added an RBI triple for the game’s only extra-base hit.
Caleb Smith, who finished with two singles, two RBI and a run scored, led off the Bell first by getting hit by a pitch and Jenkins walked. Dylan Cox followed with an RBI single for a quick 1-0 lead. Rose reached on a fielder’s choice grounder to load the bases and, one out later, Gilbert delivered a two-run single. Austin North added an RBI single later in the inning to make it 4-0.
The second inning saw Cox single and come around to score on Roses’s triple to the left-field corner. Gilbert singled to score Rose and it was 6-0 after two.
Jared Slusher walked and Devon Miller was hit by a pitch to start the third inning and North moved them into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Smith delivered an RBI single and Jenkins an RBI ground out to make it 8-0.
Bell Couty used the big lead to get some of their young players some work and they came through in the fourth. Jordan Wombles led off with a single and Ethan Mason was hit by a pitch ahead of Slusher’s RBI single. Miller added an RBI ground out and, after Scotty Fields was hit by a pitch, Smith’s RBI single set the final score at 11-0.
It was the fourth straight win for the Bobcats (9-5), they play at Leslie County on Friday.
