The Middlesboro Lady Jackets bounced back from Thursday’s loss to Clay County in fine fashion. MHS pounded out eleven runs on nine hits on the way to an 11-1 win over Barbourville on Monday.
“We hit the ball pretty good. The defense played good and we got what we needed to get back on track,” Middlesboro coach Luster Powers said.
Junior Jessica Carter struck out seven and walked two while holding the Lady Tigers to one run on two hits over five innings to earn the win. Carter also had two hits in the game as did Lauren Spurlock, Bailey Hensley and Laura Durham. Spurlock drove in five runs and senior Amanda Biscardi added a two-run double.
“Jess hurt herself a week and a half ago up at Clay County. She pulled a muscle in her hip and I’ve rested her since then,” Powers said. “I just wanted to try and get her a little bit of work in, this is the first time she’s pitched with that and she said it hurt a little bit. We’ve got two big games left and the district is coming up and I may need her to throw and inning or more. She showed she’s able to go three or four innings and she threw it pretty good today.”
The Lady Jackets struck quickly in the bottom of the first inning as Durham led off with a double and then came around to score on Hensley’s double to make it 1-0.
Middlesboro took command in the bottom of the second. Helped along by four walks, they got to Barbourville pitcher Taylor Logan for five runs.
Madison Shields walked, Carter singled and Makayla Partin walked to load the bases with one out. Biscardi and Durham both drew walks to force in runs and stretch the lead to 3-0. Partin was forced out at home on Hensely’s grounder to second, but Spurlock followed with a bases-clearing single to left-center and the Lady Jackets led it 6-0 after two.
“She struggled a little bit throwing strikes in that one inning and walked in a couple of runs and we got the hit when we needed it to clear the bases,” Powers said. “It’s hard to adjust from seeing a fast pitcher to a slower one but we did pretty good with it.”
Barbourville got on the board in the top of the third as Keysha Kelly walked with one out and came around to score on a two-out double by Amber Mills. But that’s all Carter would allow. Brandi Hembree, who had singled in the second inning, walked in the fourth for the only other Lady Tiger base runners.
The Lady Jackets put the game out of reach with five more runs in their half of the third. Shields reached on an error, Carter singled and senior Tiffany Howerton moved the runners into scoring position with a ground out. With two down, Biscardi doubled into the left-center field gap to extend the lead to 8-1. She scored on Durham’s base hit, Hensley doubled again and Spurlock capped the scoring with a two-run single to left as Middlesboro went on to the 11-1 win.
“Amanda hit the ball good right there. She’s been swinging a pretty good bat for us as the designated player and Morgan Thompson has been playing good defense in the outfield so that’s been working for us pretty well,” Powers added.
Middlesboro (14-9) plays at Corbin today while Barbourville (4-13) returns to action on Thursday at Williamsburg.
The Lady Jackets will host South Laurel on Thursday and Knox Central on Friday for their Senior Night.
