The price of a day of fun at the Black Mountain Thunder Outdoor Recreation Area is going up.

During a meeting Wednesday, the Harlan Outdoor Recreation Board discussed raising the price of the permits required to use the park.

Chairman Dallas Gilbert broke figures down for the board.

“If you charge $50 a year, that makes the park available to you to use for 73 cents a day,” said Gilbert.

Board member Mike King estimated a price increase of $10 could bring in about $60,000 additional revenue for the park.

“Or maybe not,” said board member Ken Crider. “You’ll have some people that won’t come because of it.”

Also, a suggestion was made to provide a map of the park, along with the permit, as an added incentive to help draw people who might otherwise balk at the higher permit price.

The board discussed offering a permit at a discount for local people who wish to use the park.

Gilbert suggested offering permits to people with a Harlan County driver’s license at $40 per permit.

Crider pointed out that by offering a free map, the proposed increase is not that great.

“Basically, you’re going up $5,” said Crider.

After some discussion, the motion was made and passed setting new permit prices.

The new permit prices are $50 a year for all out of town users, with a free map included in the out of town price.

Yearly permits will be $40 for local residents with a Harlan County driver’s license. A 31-day permit will run $30 with no map included.

A yearly family rate will be available for $50 for the first vehicle, $40 for the second vehicle, and $35 for each additional vehicle. The family rate includes up to four people.

In other activity the board:

* Ordered new permit stickers for the upcoming year. The new permits will be yellow;

* Decided to discontinue use of Evarts TV service.
