Winter pushes end of scho0l year to May 23

This winter, after school was canceled for all but four days in January, it might seem like students could look forward to being in class long into the summer.
But that is not the case.
Supt. Henry Webb says that, as of Thursday, the last day of school for students was May 23. He gave credit for the earlier-than-expected closing date to what he calls a “good calendar.”
“We start really early and we don’t take a lot of breaks,” Webb said. “We have a really good calendar.”
School had been called off 18 days, as of Thursday. However, that does not necessarily mean those 18 days will be tacked on to the end of the school year.
Webb noted that students attend class slightly longer than a full school day each day. Those extra minutes add up, Webb said, allowing the district to “bank” seven extra days in the calendar.
The superintendent also said that, to make up another day, students will be in class on a previously planned day-off on President’s Day.
Spring break, however, remains safe from the clutches of Old Man Winter. The school district only takes off two days for spring break, and Webb said there are no plans to schedule school on those days.
