The Middlesboro Parks and Recreation Committee announced at a recent city council meeting that a set of four soccer fields are coming to the city in the spring.
The new fields will be near the tennis courts and basketball court located on 30th Street in Middlesboro. An upcoming land survey will be performed to determine elevations and the layout best suited for the fields.
In conjunction with the construction of the soccer fields, a small park and walking track will be built around the fields.
The council reminded citizens that at the age of 65 there is a discount for city, school and county taxes. Residents should contact city hall at 606-248-5670 for more information or to see if they qualify.
At the council meeting, Discover Downtown Middlesboro Director Isaac Kremer announced the formation of an area arts group called the Magic City Collective. This group will will bring together arts and artists in the area to have a heightened chance of winning arts-related grants for the city.
DDM has plans to apply for over half-a dozen grants to benefit the city within the next few months.
In other action, the council meeting:
- Approved minutes from the November meeting;
- Refunded a privilege license for Todd LTC Pharmacy, PLLC due to business closure;
- Approved 2013 ad valorem tax refunds totaling $144.04;
- Scheduled the Finance, Community Development and Safety Committee meeting for Jan. 14 at 6 p.m.
