Pineville Middle School and High School recently sent a group of students to participate in the Kentucky Association for Academic Competition Governor’s Cup.

Several participants from the math, language arts and social studies quick recall teams placed second in the district competition and will be competing in the regional competition on March 15 and 16. Overall, the school finished in 6th place out of 15 participating teams and won the sportsmanship award.

The first reading of the revised school calendar occurred at Tuesday’s School Board meeting. The amended calendar includes 171 of the required 170 calendar days due to the makeup days that were previously scheduled into the calendar.

No additional days will be added to the calendar. Previously scheduled makeup days on March 20 and 21 will be in session.

Pineville will begin participation in the Children’s Reading Foundation of Appalachia’s READY for kindergarten program. This program will give parents tools to ensure their child’s success during the early years of their schooling.

“We need to pair our very best teachers with this program so we can see the most good come out of it. It’s really a great tool,” said Pineville Elementary Principal Cynthia Smith.

Results from the Kindergarten Screener Test were recently recorded at 58 percent passing rate which is 7 percentage points above the state average. Kindergartners which were members of the Pineville Preschool program had recorded scores at a 73 percent passing rate.
