The American Cancer Society Relay for Life Bell County hosted the annual kick-off at the Middlesboro Mall on Thursday. This is the 10th year for the event.

Roxanne Rose, Relay for Life specialist, was introduced at the event.

John Robinson is the event chairman for the event. He has been involved with the kick-off for the past five years. He said the goal is to raise $43,000 by the end of the season.

Relay for Life host events throughout the summer in which families and friends can form their own overnight relay teams and help raise funds to fight cancer.

The relay is a fun way to bring the community together and raise cancer awareness, he said.

The relay is about supporting those who have survived cancer and remembering those who have passed on, said Rose.

Cancer survivors from the community join together for the victory lap to start the event.

Also, the Ceremony of Hope is held where candles are lit for those who have passed due to the disease.

In Kentucky today, 68 people will be told they have cancer and $18,784 will be used in research funded by the American Cancer Society, according to information presented.

Various people came together to share their stories about cancer, whether if affected them directly or someone they knew.

Awards were given and recognition held for survivors within the community.

The relay event will be held June 6 at Middlesboro High School.
