One student was charged with assault after allegedly cutting another student with a pocket knife at Middlesboro Middle School on Wednesday.

According to Middlesboro Police Department Officer Petey Gilbert, the student who was charged was transported to a juvenile facility and appeared in court Wednesday.

Gilbert said the two boys were stabbing each other back and forth with pencils when one of them pulled out a pocket knife and cut the other student across the outside portion of the thigh. Gilbert said he was contacted about the incident around 1 p.m.

According to Gilbert, the child who was cut had already left the school before he got there. When the student was found, Gilbert gave the boy a ride to the hospital. He said the slash on the boy’s thigh was about a half-inch long.

“As soon as I got word that it happened, it was dealt with immediately,” said acting Middlesboro Middle School Principal Bill Jones.

Jones said once he found out there was a knife involved he got the police involved.

“Pocket knives are not allowed on any school property,” said Jones about a student having a knife at the school.

Gilbert took over the investigation at that point, contacting parents of those involved.

As for possible expulsion or suspension for the student who brought the knife, Jones said it’s too early to assume any of that yet. He said the incident is in the criminal part of the investigation.

“It will go through the court system,” said Jones. “The kid did a dumb thing, and he will pay for it.”

Jones said there were no other students in any danger at the time of the incident.

The mother of the child who was cut said the boy needed stitches and was returning to the hospital yesterday because he could not put pressure on his leg. The mother also said she plans to enroll her son into Yellow Creek School Center, which is in the Bell School District.
