TENNENT, N.J. — Lincoln Memorial University head men’s basketball coach Josh Schertz has been named a finalist for the 2014 Red Auerbach College Coach of the Year Award, the Jewish Coaches Association (JCA) announced on Wednesday. It’s the second straight season Schertz is one of the finalists for the prestigious award — given annually to the nation’s top Jewish college coach.

The other finalists are The College of Idaho’s Scott Garson and Southern Methodist University’s Larry Brown. Schertz earns the nod after leading the Railsplitters (28-3) to the program’s third South Atlantic Conference regular-season title and second tournament championship since the 2010-11 campaign. In addition to nabbing the fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament berth, the Railsplitters broke the SAC single-season record for wins and winning percentage at 90.3 percent.

Schertz — a 2000 graduate of Florida Atlantic University — was the 2013-14 SAC Coach of the Year, which marked his second time earning that distinction along with the 2010-11 prize. Additionally, he is a two-time finalist for the Clarence Gaines National Division II Coach of the Year Award as well as a finalist for the Jack Bennett Award at the conclusion of the 2012-13 season.

Since his arrival at Lincoln Memorial prior to the 2008-09 campaign, Schertz has been the maestro of an unprecedented turnaround and run of success for the Railsplitters. The season before Schertz took over, the Railsplitters were 8-20 overall and 1-13 in the SAC. After building steadily under Schertz with a 14-14 mark in 2008-09 and a 20-9 clip in 2009-10, Lincoln Memorial has rolled off 106 wins with only 18 losses since 2010-11. Schertz’s .870 winning percentage since the 2010-11 season ranks among the highest in all of the NCAA.

The Jewish Coaches Association’s yearly award is named in honor of NBA Hall of Fame coach Red Auerbach, who won nine NBA championships from 1957-1966. The winner of the 2014 Red Auerbach Award will be announced at the Final Four in Dallas, Texas.
