HARLAN —The Cumberland Gap Lady Panthers got three straight hits with two out in the top of the seventh inning to push across the only run in a 1-0 win at Harlan on Friday. The win snapped a two-game losing streak for Cumberland Gap.
Senior Genna Lake pitched a complete game shutout to get the victory. She scattered five hits while striking out five and walking three.
Lake also started that two-out rally in the seventh with a single. Samantha Pierce added an infield single and Chelsey Williams followed with a base hit to center as courtesy runner Brooklyn Creech came home with only run of the game.
Madison Brewer took the loss for the Lady Green Dragons. She gave up just the one run on four hits while walking three and striking out two.
Harlan threatened early on as Madison Noe led off both the first and third innings with base hits and senior Jourdan Ledford walked with two out in both frames, but Lake pitched out trouble. In the second inning, it was Alyssa Mills smacking a double with one out but back-to-back strike outs ended that inning.
Shanae Thomas led off the Harlan fourth with a single, but was thrown out stealing by Lady Panther catcher Tessa Pittman. Lake retired eight of the next ten batters, pitching around a walk to Katie King in the fifth and Thomas reaching on an error in the sixth. Kaitlyn Jenkins singled to start the bottom of the seventh, but Lake got three straight ground outs to end the game.
Jourdan Thacker doubled leading off the second inning for Cumberland Gap’s only hit before the seventh inning. She stole third but left stranded there. Makenzie Miracle walked leading off the game, went to second on a wild pitch and to third on a ground out, but that was as far as she got.
In the second inning, Katelyn McCarty walked with two out and got to second on a passed ball, but Brewer coaxed Pittman into flying out to left to end that inning. A walk to Williams with two out in the fifth was the only other Lady Panther base runner until the seventh.
Thacker led off off the seventh by walking, but she was picked off by Jenkins, the Harlan catcher. But the Lady Panthers were able to rally with two down.
Cumberland Gap (5-2) was scheduled to play at Knox Central on Monday and then host Grainger in District 2-AA action on Tuesday. Harlan (1-2) was to play Oneida Baptist on Monday in the first round of the 13th Region All “A” Classic. With a win, they’ll host Pineville in the semifinals on Tuesday.
