BARBOURVILLE — The Cumberland Gap Lady Panthers pounded out 16 hits on their way to a 16-4 win at Knox Central in previously unreported action from Monday.
Freshman outfielder Samantha Pierce led the way with four hits, including a double and a triple. She scored three runs and drove in three. Junior first baseman Jourdan Thacker also finished with three runs and three RBI on a double, a walk, a fielder’s choice grounder and a sacrifice fly.
Lindsey Elliott added three singles and scored twice, Makenzie Miracle singled twice and drove in two, Tessa Pittman added two singles and two runs scored, while Katelyn McCarty tripled and Julia Satterfield doubled in the game.
Senior pitcher Genna Lake allowed just three hits over five innings while striking out five, walking five and hitting a batter. Just one of the four runs she gave up was earned. Lake also added a single and a pair of RBI ground-outs at the plate.
The Lady Panthers jumped on top with seven runs in the top of the second inning. Thacker started the long rally by drawing a walk and Satterfield followed with a double. Lake’s ground out to short brought Thacker home and Pierce followed with an RBI single. Chelsey Williams then reached on an error and a double-steal put runners at second and third. Miracle’s two-run single made it 4-0 and McCarty followed with her triple and then scored on a passed ball as the lead grew to 6-0. Pittman and Elliott both singled and, after another double steal, Thacker’s fly ball to left scored Pittman for a 7-0 Cumberland Gap lead.
Knox Central got on the board in their half of the inning as Savannah Abner walked and Cheyenne Bingham singled before Londa Rice reached on an error as Abner scored and Bingham then came home on a passed pall.
Pierce led off the third inning with a triple to right-center and scored on an error on the play to make it 8-2.
Knox freshman Sarah Swafford homered to straight-away center to open the bottom of the inning. Hannah Corey reached on an error, Bingham walked, and Corey scored when Cortney Mays reached on another error with two out. But 8-4 was as close as the Knox Lady Panthers would get.
Cumberland Gap added three runs in the fourth. Elliott scored on a wild pitch, Thacker came home on another RBI ground-out from Lake, and Satterfield scored on Pierce’s RBI single.
The Lady Panthers put the game away with five more runs in the fifth. Thacker had a two-run double, Pierce an RBI double and Williams and RBI ground-out in the inning.
Both teams are scheduled to return to action on Thursday, weather permitting, with Cumberland Gap (6-2) hosting Barbourville and Knox Central (3-3) visiting South Laurel.
