Bell County would shift back to the eastern side of the state for playoff pairings and Pineville would welcome a couple of traditional rivals into their district under the proposed football alignment for the 2015-18 seasons. The draft alignment was approved by the KHSAA Board of Control last week. Middlesboro’s district would stay exactly the same.

The Bobcats will be moving from Class 3A’s District 4 to District 8, though the teams in the district remain the same with one exception — Jackson County moves in to take the place of Wayne County, which was bumped up to Class 4A. Corbin, Casey County and McCreary Central round out the district.

Instead of meeting teams from halfway across the state in early rounds of the postseason, Bell’s district will now compete in a region with Breathitt County, Estill County, Knott County Central, Morgan County and Powell County.

Pineville shifts from District 6 to District 7 in Class 1A. They’ll be joined by traditional rivals Harlan, Lynn Camp and Williamsburg in the district. Hazard and Jenkins will be going to District 8 under the draft along with Phelps, Pikeville and South Floyd. Teams from District 7 and District 8 will meet each other in the first few rounds of the playoffs.

Middlesboro will remain in Class 2A’s District 7 along with Somerset, Danville and Lexington Christian Academy. The other half of their region is also similar with District 8 including Prestonsburg, Leslie County, Shelby Valley, Allen Central, Betsy Layne and East Ridge.

The draft alignment was configured after member schools were given the chance to request to “play up” in classification. Schools will be surveyed and their feedback will be presented to the board at the May 12 meeting when the alignment is expected to be finalized.
