The Pineville Mountain Lions got their season off to a rousing start with a 28-0 road win at South Floyd on Friday.

Tucker Woolum hooked up with freshman Nike Mason for a 65-yard touchdown pass on the very first play from scrimmage and the Lions never looked back.

“We came out and scored on the first play, Nike got open on a post pattern and we got off to a good start,” Pineville coach Bart Elam said. “It was sloppy at times, I figured it would be. But I was really proud of the kids and pleased with their effort. Defensively we made adjustments as the game went on and learned throughout the game.”

Woolum later hit Will Adams for a three-yard touchdown pass and Bradley Fuson’s conversion run made it 14-0 in the second quarter and that was still the score at halftime.

Senior Keith Sexton recovered a fumble early in the third quarter and Pineville went to their ground game. The Lions ran the ball ten times on a 12-play drive with Woolum passing to Robbie Miller for a 30-yard gain. Miller also had four carries for 24 yards on the march and Woolum capped it with a one-yard sneak to push the lead to 20-0 with 6:05 to play in the third quarter.

Sexton then came up with an interception, but the next Lion drive ended in a lost fumble.

Freshman Jordan Wombles set up the final Pineville score with a 26-yard run and capped that drive with a four-yard TD run. Josh Lawson hauled in Woolum’s pass for the conversion that set the final score at 28-0.

“Our young kids played great and all of our back did a great job. Bradley Fuson and Robbie Miller ran hard and when our receivers needed to catch the ball they did,” Elam said. “I thought our o-line did better throughout the game and our d-line did a great job. The linebackers got better as the game went on. We’ve still got a lot we can work on this week getting ready for Middlesboro.”

It was a balanced offensive attack. Wombles finished with 74 rushing yards on eight carries, Fuson had 45 yards on eight carries and Miller added 40 yards on nine rushes. Woolum completed seven of eleven passes for 136 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He also ran five times for 35 yards and a touchdowns.

Mason had two catches for 66 yards and a touchdown. Adams caught three passes for 37 yards and a touchdown.

Pineville (1-0) hosts Middlesboro next Friday while South Floyd (0-2) hosts Hannan, W.Va.
