PINEVILLE — A local production of Kentucky writer Silas House’s play “The Hurting Part” got a special treat Monday night during dress rehearsals before the premier this weekend. The best-selling author stopped by the Bell Theatre in Pineville to see the show and meet with actors and crew of the Middlesboro Little Theatre (MLT).
House, who’s from nearby Lily, Ky., said “The Hurting Part” is his first play and one he wrote specifically for this region.
“I’m glad it’s being produced in Appalachia by a community theatre in Bell County,” said House, moments before the rehearsal began on stage.
House said he liked to attend productions of his plays so he could answer questions from the cast. He said the Christmas-themed play has been performed at Elkhorn City, Ky., and had 15 sold-out shows in Lexington, Ky.
Director Ken Maciula said MLT was fortunate to be able to perform House’s play.
“Since he’s local, we were lucky enough to get in touch with him,” said Maciula, adding that they contacted his agent and obtained the rights to perform the play. “It’s just nice to have his presence and his sponsorship.”
Maciula said he felt the show would appeal to a broad audience in the area, especially since the play is set in eastern Kentucky.
Stage Manager Judy Cox said that local school systems are taking advantage of the education aspect of the play. Several schools will be bringing students as part of their education in Appalachian literature.
Cox said that House will be attending the play on Dec. 13. Also, the real-life counterparts of the characters Thelma and Betty will be in attendance on Dec. 4. Music for the play is performed by Common Strings.
Shows are scheduled for December 4, 5, 6, and 11, 12, 13. The Friday and Saturday performances will be at 8 p.m. with the box office opening at 7:15 p.m. and Sunday performances are at 2:30 p.m. with the box office opening at 1:45 p.m. All performances will be at the Bell Theatre in Pineville. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students, children, and seniors. If there is room, walk-ins may attend on Dec. 4 and 11.
