CUMBERLAND GAP, Tenn. — A home invasion that happened last Thursday night in Cumberland Gap has been solved, according to a press release from the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Department.
Officers arrived on scene at 8 p.m. last Thursday at the home of J.C. Yoakum, 66, on 944 Tipprel Road and discovered that his door had been breached. Yoakum was found brutally beaten in the head and stabbed with a knife numerous times, according to Sheriff David Ray.
An investigation led to the arrest of Eddie Gent, 40, of 573 Arthur Road, Cumberland Gap. Gent was placed in custody in the Claiborne County Jail, where he remains. He was charged with aggravated robbery.
“The witness statements and direct evidence were the key elements in solving this terrible crime,” said Captain David Honeycutt.
“Crimes like this are very disturbing to me and our office will continue to seek out those who prey on the weak and infirm,” said Ray.
Yoakum was taken to Claiborne County Hospital for emergency treatment, and then flown by Lifestar to U.T. Hospital where he is listed in critical condition.
Eddie Gent was arraigned before General Sessions Judge Robert Estep today and bond was set at $100,000.
At the time of the incident, Honeycutt responded to the scene, along with Deputies Mark Brock and Josh Jeffers.
