Bell Co. Circuit Court hands down sentences

PINEVILLE — The Bell County Circuit Court recently handed down several sentencings.

Curtis Lewis, 64, of Knoxville, Tenn., was found guilty of an amended charge of second degree facilitation to commit trafficking in a controlled substance, a Class A misdemeanor, first offense. Lewis was sentenced to serve one year in the Bell County Jail, which will be probated, and he will be placed on unsupervised probation for a period of two years. He will be required to pay court costs in the amount of $131 within 180 days.

Sonya Elaine Rodgers, 29, of Middlesboro was found guilty of promoting contraband in the first degree, a Class D felony. Rodgers was sentenced to serve one year in a state penitentiary designated by the Department of Corrections. She will be required to pay court costs in the amount of $151 within 180 days of release, and will receive credit for three days time served in jail.

Robert W. Thomas, 28, of Middlesboro was found guilty of an amended charge of third degree burglary, a Class D felony. Thomas was sentenced to serve five years in a state penitentiary designated by the Department of Corrections. Thomas will be required to pay restitution on behalf of the victim, Robert Burley Stephens, in the amount of $5,445 and court costs in the amount of $151 within 180 days of release.

Thelma Hubbard, 56, of Middlesboro was found guilty of the charge of facilitation to using a false name/title to procure a controlled substance, a Class A misdemeanor, first offense. Hubbard was sentenced to serve one year in the Bell County Jail, which will be probated, and she will be placed on supervised probation for a period of two years. She will also be required to pay court costs in the amount of $151 within 180 days.

Curtis Hall, 46, of Arjay was found guilty of theft by unlawful taking or disposition under $300, a Class A misdemeanor. Hall will be required to pay a fine in the amount of $250 and court costs in the amount of $151 within 180 days.

James S. Hatfield, 45, of Harlan was found guilty of the charges of first degree possession of a controlled substance, a Class D felony, first offense, possession of drug paraphernalia, a Class A misdemeanor, first offense, and public intoxication, a Class B misdemeanor. Hatfield was sentenced to serve two years and six months at a place designated by the Department of Corrections, and an additional 15 months in the Bell County Jail. The sentences will run concurrently with each other. He will be required to pay court costs in the amount of $151 within 180 days of release, and will receive credit for two days time served in jail.

Carolyn Houston Johnson, 52, of Calvin, Ky., was found guilty of the charges of second degree criminal possession of a forged instrument, each a Class D felony. Johnson was sentenced to five years in a state penitentiary, but will actually serve 62 days in the Bell County Jail. She will be placed on supervised probation for a period of five years. Johnson will be required to pay court costs in the amount of $151 and restitution in the amount of $2,160 on behalf of the victim, Capital One Financial.

Anthony Jerome Carter, 41, of Middlesboro was found guilty of an amended charge of second degree assault, a Class C felony. Carter was sentenced to seven years in a state penitentiary designated by the Department of Corrections. He will be required to pay court costs in the amount of $151 within 180 days of release, and will receive credit for 207 days served in jail.
