Bell County started the 2008 season in impressive fashion, rolling to a 50-6 win over Garrard County in the Death Valley Bowl at Lincoln County.
Spencer Green ran for 183 yards on 16 carries and ten other Bobcats carried the ball as Bell rolled up 347 rushing yards.
Shawnta Zachery completed 6-of-8 passes for 127 yards, including a 25-yard touchdown to Matt Raines.
Greer broke off a 53 yard run on Bell’s opening series and then plunged in to the end zone from one yard out. Monte Merrick’s kick made it 7-0.
Bell was driving again later in the first quarter but lost a fumble deep in Garrard County territory.
The Lions were putting together a drive of their own with Cash Staley completing short passes. But Matt Simpson intercepted Staley at midfield and returned the pick 51 yards for a touchdown to make it 14-0 early in the second quarter.
Zachery scored on a two-yard keeper and the Bobcats took a 21-0 lead into halftime.
Senior fullback Justin Goodin had a two-yard touchdwon run of his own and Zachery passed to Raines for the TD as the lead grew to 35-0 in the third.
Tyler Harbin ran for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter to make it 42-0.
Garrard County avoided the shutout when Zack Hounshell picked up a fumble and took it 30 yards for a score.
Freshman Cory Davenport completed the scoring with a 60-yard run and Josh Brown ran in for the conversion at Bell won 50-6.
Bell (1-0) will host Whitley County (1-0) next Friday.
