CGHS, JFWA compete at regional meet

GRAY, Tenn. — The Tennessee Region 1, Class A & AA cross country meet was held Thursday at Daniel Boone High School. Cumberland Gap and the J. Frank White Academy had runners in both the boys and girls varsity races.

Cumberland Gap senior Courtney Crowder was the only local runner advancing to state as she finished 10th overall with a time of 22:33.85.

The Lady Panthers placed seventh in the region as a team while the J. Frank White Academy was eighth.

Rounding out the CGHS field were freshman Kierstyn Carmical (35th, 26:22.57), freshman Danielle Caldwell (41st, 25:09.70), sophomore Brook Fuson (42nd, 27:29.70), freshman Whitney Elliott (54th, 29:36.68), senior Chelsea Hurst (61st, 32:02.20) and junior Emily Ely (62nd, 32:27.15).

The Lady Knights were led by freshman Allison Moon who finished 33rd in a time of 25:50.89. Also running for JFW were sophomore Alisa Batchelor (37th, 26:30.69), senior Clarissa Medley (39th, 26:39.93), junior Jessica Dixon (47th, 28:13.22), junior Mary Alice Coker (56th, 29:54.96) and junior Katie Mundy (63rd, 32:29.94)

In the boys race, Cumberland Gap placed 10th in the region while J. Frank White didn’t qualify as a team with only three runners.

Leading the Panthers was sophomore Micah Wade who was 35th overall in a time of 20:49.20. Also running for CGHS were freshman Matthew Wade (44th, 21:45.66), sophomore Mitchell York (63rd, 24:25.32), sophomore Jon Slaven (65th, 24:43.95), junior Tyler Compton (66th, 24:57.31) and junior Brandon Head (69th, 26:15.52).

Senior Winston Kelly was the top finisher for the Knights as he came in 43rd with a time of 21:44.73. Also running for JFW were sophomore Will Hopper (55th, 23:07.42) and freshman Jay Coker (72nd, 26:33.98).

Johnson City’s University High was the first place winner in both the boys and girls races with Greeneville second in both. Chuckey-Doak was third in the boys race with West Greene taking third in the girls.

The individual winner in the boys race was University’s Carter McVeigh with a time of 16:57.54. Greeneville’s Dylan Jones was second at 17:14.42 and Elizabethton’s David Laporte was third at 17:16.83.

Winning the girls race was Greeneville’s Ashley Ellenburg in a time of 20:54.95. University’s Landry Loving was second at 21:11.03 and Paige Bible of Greeneville was third at 22:02.65.
