MIDDLESBORO — Cumberland Trails United Way 2010 Campaign Kick-Off took place at Cumberland Gap National Historical Park Thursday afternoon.
Representatives of various supporting agencies, along with several sponsors, community members and contributors, were in attendance to help launch the campaign.
The mission of the Cumberland Trails United Way (CTUW) is to strengthen the capacity of the organizations that provide community-building services. CTUW raises funds — mainly in the workplace — with the goal of funding a wide variety of health care, human resource, and developmental agencies. Their purpose is to have a positive influence on the CTUW’s service area, which consists of Whitley, Knox and Bell Counties in Kentucky, Lee County, Virginia, and Claiborne County, Tennessee.
CTUW helps bring together coalitions of people in order to resolve the critical problems that impact the community. The support provided by CTUW assures the availability of network services for all parts of the community, emphasizing careful judgment of the community's needs, responsible fundraising and efficient allowance of funds.
The CTUW organized a Fund Distribution Committee, which determines the needs of the community and effectively distributes the funds to the agencies who best meet those needs. The organization supports 24 agencies in six counties, covering three states with nearly $100,000 of funding each year.
CTUW President Mary Wethington welcomed everyone in attendance on Thursday afternoon.
“We are here today for one specific reason and that is to officially kick off the Cumberland Trails United Way 2010 fundraising campaign,” stated Wethington. “We appreciate the effort you put forth to come out today.”
She then discussed the mission of the campaign and the importance of community involvement/support.
“We want you to know that the Cumberland Trails United Way could not operate without all the wonderful members on our board,” explained Wethington. “Each one of the individuals that serve on the board recognize that there are always great and varied needs in our community. Some needs are greater than others and there is all kinds of ways each of us as individuals can help. But we know that by working together and uniting our efforts, we can do much more than we could individually and that’s what we’re about.”
CTUW Campaign Chairman Baylor Fulton also addressed the crowd. He spoke about the goals of the 2010 campaign and the approach that needed to be taken in order to be successful.
“Our goal this year is $120,000. That is somewhat ambitious because as you well know, companies and individuals are all tightening their belts,” said Fulton. “But the thing that we have seen is that the need has increased. That is why we feel like if we go out there with a positive attitude and work hard, then we can hopefully reach this goal of $120,000.”
Fulton added, “If you look at the years past, it seems like all the people and folks in our counties that we represent always rise to the occasion. And somehow, blessings from God I guess, we have always reached our goal.”
He then discussed the importance of providing for the individual in need. He explained that in order to be effective the CTUW must build strong relationships with community people, understand the dynamic of communication and embrace the idea of unity.
“We want them to know that our goal is to get them to feel like they’re partnering with us. It’s not just the United Way doing this, it’s all of us,” Fulton said. “Together we can do this because of the families, and the children, and the individuals that the agencies see everyday. I know they see that the need is greater.”
