Claiborne Progress

Tragedy struck Saturday as a local woman was hit and killed by a train.

A call came in around 10:10 a.m. that a train from Norfolk Southern Railroad had struck a person walking on the railroad tracks, just south of the George Brooks Memorial Bridge.

Brenda Kaye Seals, 55, of New Tazewell, was walking on the railroad tracks to return to her residence and had just walked under the George Brooks Memorial Bridge when she was struck, according to the police report.

The train was traveling in the same direction and the train engineer stated he did not see Seals until he began to come out of the overpass. According to the report, the engineer blew the train’s whistle several times and attempted to stop the train. The engineer stated that Seals saw the train just before it hit her.

Seals was taken to the Claiborne County Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Several law enforcement agencies responded to the scene, including the New Tazewell Police Department, Claiborne County Sheriff’s Department, and Claiborne County EMS. New Tazewell Police Det. Wayne Mewhinney is the investigating officer.
