ST. CHARLES, Va. (AP) — One man is dead and another has serious injuries after a rail car loaded with coal derailed in Southwest Virginia and landed on a van in which the two were riding.

Virginia State Police said the driver of the van, 31-year-old Jamie Collins of Baxter, died early Monday at Lee Regional Medical Center. His passenger, 33-year-old Jason H. Williams of Viper, is being treated in Kingsport, Tenn., for serious injuries.

According to Virginia investigators, the CSX rail car derailed in St. Charles late Sunday. The van used to shuttle railroad employees was parked along the train tracks with the two men inside when the coal car overturned on it.

State police are investigating.
