CUMBERLAND GAP, Tenn. — On Monday evening, the Board of Mayor and Alderman (BMA) assembled in regular session at the Cumberland Gap Town Hall.
Members of the BMA Board discussed a proposed plan to construct a 1,000 seat music hall at the end of Roslyn Street in the town of Cumberland Gap. Sue Webb, local business owner, brought the project idea to the attention of the Board at a recent public hearing, and is still awaiting approval to get the plan in motion.
Alderman Bill McGaffee made a recommendation to the board to approve the construction of the music hall.
“There are going to be some things we have to work out before we can go ahead and approve that,” stated McGaffee. “But my suggestion is to go ahead and get the lawyers to work with her to see what needs to be done.”
A public meeting will be held in the coming weeks to discuss and/or approve the proposed tourist attraction. Community members will be able to voice their opinions concerning construction matters in relation to the planning, surveying and zoning of the proposed music hall.
Upon public approval, another BMA meeting will be held the following month in order to further discuss building plans and contractual/financial agreements. Planning will begin after community/board authorization, and construction could start as early as spring of next year.
The Board also approved/addressed the following business during regular session:
• The minutes of July meeting, bills, financial statement, monthly refunds, budget transfers, payroll issues, monthly appropriations and disbursements.
• Local officials addressed the BMA Board and discussed monthly law and order reports, planning and zoning issues, as well as Cumberland Gap Fire Department concerns.
• Community ordinances, city building updates and public notifications.
• The Tourism/Event Committee began planning for upcoming charity events in October and for the annual Halloween celebration hosted by Cumberland Gap Fire Department. Crazy Aunt Sadie’s Yard Sale will be held on October 3 and anyone wishing to register can do so at www.townofcumberlandgap.com.
• Town Recorder Linda Moyers was appointed to the Claiborne County Communities Advisory Board and will attend regular meetings.
• Water and sewer issues were addressed, and numerous leaks were reported. The Board intends to invest in a new flow meter and camera system — on a limited budget — in order to prevent further water damage.
• The town of Cumberland Gap is also looking to apply for a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) in order to improve and increase community development activities.
