Staff Report

A forest fire began to spread along U.S. 119 on Thursday. At one point, the fire appeared to be close to the First State Financial building in the area.

District forester Jared Calvert stated the building was in no harm because the crews created a line to prevent the fire from spreading.

The fire along U.S. 119 is 350 acres in size, but 100 percent contained, according to Calvert. Forestry crews continued to work around the perimeter on Friday to ensure the fire remained contained.

Calvert said the crews have protected many structures and utilities in the area.

“Our crews worked throughout the Thanksgiving holiday week to protect the citizens, structures and to prevent the fire from spreading,” said Calvert.

There have been several fires throughout the holiday week. Calvert stated a four-wheeler was spotted near the scene by airplane. He also stated there are possible suspects and the fires remain under investigation.

On Thanksgiving, there was a total of eight new fires, with an additional two fires from Wednesday. The forestry department worked 10 fires in the 10 counties the department covers.

Calvert advises no one to burn anything at this time. He stated there have been some debris fires that have escaped and spread. Those wanting to know information about possible burning bans can contact the forestry division at 606-337-3011 or the judge-executives office at 337-3076.

Anyone with information about the fires can contact the forestry division or call 1-800-27arson. There is a reward offered of up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest.
