Parking meters around Pineville may end up getting a make over or being removed in the months ahead. Councilman Bo Bush addressed the issue during the regular council meeting on Monday.
Bush asked Main Street Pineville Director JoAnna Foley if her agency would like to have the parking meters removed. Foley, however, expressed interest in a different approach.
Foley said other areas around the state have taken an art approach to parking meters. She said some areas have allowed different nonprofit groups to decorate the meters. The group would then receive the proceeds from the meter.
She also said the group would be responsible for keeping the meter clean. Foley said the meters are an “eyesore” if the city is not benefiting from them.
Some of the council members stated some of the meters do not work. Mayor Sherwin Rader said she could see financial issues and maintenance issues if the city keeps the parking meters.
“They are an expense anyway you look at it,” said Rader.
Rader also stated the city does not require people to pay for parking, and the meters only bring in a couple hundred dollars each year.
Pineville City Attorney John Gambrel said if the meters are removed, they will need to be removed properly. That would mean they would have to be completely removed instead of cut down.
Council did not take formal action on the issue during the meeting.
