LONDON — One night after Corbin couldn’t buy a 3-pointer the Redhounds hit 10-of-16 shots from long range Friday as they knocked off Pineville 75-58 in a semifinal of the Legacy Nissan Shootout at North Laurel.
Trevor Hill opened the scoring with a 3 from the right corner just 15 seconds in and the Redhound would never trail. Hill hit three from distance as Corbin built a 13-5 lead by the 3:44 mark of the first quarter.
That margin grew to 17-5 before the Mountain Lions closed the period on a 6-0 run. Connor Ford hit a free throw and then scored after grabbing an offensive rebound and Seth Jeffrey banked in a 40-footer at the buzzer to cut it to 17-11 going into the second quarter.
Pineville got as close as four points on three different occasions before halftime. Once on a Byron David Asher basket early in the period, again after Jared Philpot knocked down a 14-footer and Jeffrey hit two free throws, and for the last time on John Simpson’s layup off a pretty feed from Isaac Longworth that made the score 25-21 with about 3:00 left in the half.
Corbin’s Kevin Goins scored seven points during a 10-4 run, including a 3-pointer that pushed the lead to 35-25 with 48 seconds remaining before halftime.
Pineville’s Dalton Ledbetter hit a pair of free throws and at the break the score was 35-27.
In addition to the outside shooting, a big key for Corbin was their halfcourt man defense. They did an excellent job of preventing the Lions from getting the ball inside to Simpson — he managed just three points in the game — and as a result the Pineville offense struggled at times.
A 3-pointer from Philpot brought the Lions within 37-30 early in the third quarter, but Hill answered with back-to-back treys. Threes by Hunter Grubb and Kaleb Maguet followed by baskets from Grubb and Goins extended the lead to 54-32 by the 2:03 mark of the third quarter.
Pineville got threes from Longworth and Cody Collett to get back within 58-39 by the end of the third.
Redhound center Roby Igo converted a three-point play to open the fourth quarter. Pineville’s Jacob Skinner answered with a three-point play of his own, then hit a jumper and later a free throw to cut it to 61-45 but the Lions would get no closer than 16 points the rest of the way.
Hill led the Redhounds with 22 points while Maguet added 14, Goins 13 and Igo 11. The Lions were led by Asher’s 11 points while Collett finished with nine and Philpot and Skinner chipped in with eight apiece.
Both teams continue play in the tournament today with Pineville (6-5) facing Whitley County at 5:30 p.m. in the third place game and Corbin (7-3) taking on host North Laurel at 7 p.m. for the championship.
